I have an extremely family friendly meal to share today. This is one of my guys all time favorite things that I make for dinner. Now, I don’t make it too often as it’s definitely not one of the most healthy meals out there. It’s basically just a bunch of cheese, butter, chicken and crescent rolls.
I usually make a really big salad with this one and have everyone load up on the greens in hopes that they don’t overindulge. I should have taken a picture of the pan AFTER dinner. While there are plenty of leftovers…we definitely put a dent in the dish!
I do like this dish as I can make it ahead of time then just toss it in the oven while we are working on homework. It’s a great way to use up any leftover chicken.
This recipe is part of the Publix Menu Plan – Week Of 9/18. Here are the other recipes that I have shared so far –
- Avocado Tuna Melt Sandwich Ring
- Chicken Cordon Bleu Roll Ups, Zucchini Crisps & Roasted Potatoes
- 1/2 cup + 2 tablespoons heavy cream, divided
- 1 can cream of chicken soup, 10.5 oz
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
- 1/2 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cans 8 oz crescent rolls
- 2 cups cooked chicken, chopped
- 4 oz cream cheese, softened
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened
- 1/4 teaspoons salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- Preheat oven to 350º F.
- In a medium saucepan, add 1/2 cup of heavy cream, cream of chicken soup and 3/4 cup of cheddar cheese.
- Cook over medium until the cheese is melted and then set aside.
- In a large bowl, add the chopped chicken, onion, 1/2 cup cheddar cheese, cream cheese, softened butter, salt, pepper, garlic powder and 2 tablespoons of cream then mix until combined.
- Butter a large casserole dish and spread a thin layer of prepared sauce in the bottom of the dish.
- Unroll the crescent rolls and separate.
- Place a large dollop of the chicken filling onto the wide end of the crescent (a heaping tablespoon).
- Roll the crescent around the filling (tucking to cover the filling) then place in the prepared casserole dish seam side down.
- Repeat this process with all rolls.
- Spoon the cheese sauce over each roll and sprinkle with 1/4 cup of cheddar cheese.
- Bake at 350º for 35 – 40 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
Woo hoo – this looks great! I needed something else to make with leftover chicken besides chicken pot pie and this looks like it will make everybody very, very happy!

Can you use milk instead of the cream?
I make a very similar recipe and use 2% milk; comes out just fine. My recipe does not have butter in the chicken filling – the cream cheese is plenty creamy. Also, I use green onions instead of a regular onion when I have them for a little color. My family loves this dish!
Yep…you can use milk just may be a little less “creamy” but the benefit is less fat and calories 😉

Where so the onions go?
Sorry…they go in the filling 🙂 I will update.

Sorry about the typo. Where do the onions go?

I wonder if I could use Costco leftover chicken salad. Just put a dollop of chicken salad on the crescent roll and cover with cheese and bake.

I made this tonight and it was wonderful!!! The only change I made was using skim milk instead of cream and it was plenty creamy and moist. I grilled two breasts and chopped it up really fine. Will definitely make this again! Thank you for the recipe 🙂
