Today I have another recipe that is from my husband’s mom – Onion Joes.
Many years ago when we were first married I asked him what he wanted for dinner. He mentioned that he would love some onion burgers. So, I dumped some Lipton Onion Soup mix into ground beef and grilled up what I always considered onion burgers.
While he was appreciative of the dinner, he explained that his mom’s onion burgers were totally different. He got me the recipe and I decided to re-name them so there would be no confusion in his dinner request. These Onion Joes are a version of a loose meat sandwich and are super simple to make. It’s kinda like a sloppy joe but it’s got an onion flavor rather than a tomato flavor.
The key to these (in my opinion) is having enough of the sauce. Too little and you just have crumbled ground beef on a bun. If you are looking for a tasty meal without a ton of prep AND is easy on the wallet – try these Onion Joes.
This recipe is part of the Publix Menu Plan For The Week Of 6/26. Here are the other recipes that I have already shared –
- Pork Chops With Apple & Onion Stuffing, Zucchini Crisps
- Swedish Meatballs, Rice & Steamed Veggies
- Lemon Orzo Salad with Watermelon & Feta – Publix Menu Plan Recipe
- 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 packet of dry onion soup mix
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 1 tablespoon flour
- Brown the beef with the chopped onion then drain.
- Pour in the soup mix and water then simmer for about 5 minutes.
- Add the flour and simmer until thickened.
- Serve over buns.
When I saw this on your menu I was so hoping you would share the recipe. Thanks!

That is some super duper lean ground beef what kind is it?
Hahaha-Zaycon…love it! It’s all I have used for years now. It’s super lean like 93/7.
(well I did get some from my buddy who owns cattle…but I didn’t pay for that)

Michelle,
I got almost the same recipe from my MIL many years ago. Only differences–she used the Beefy Onion, 2T flour, and served over mashed potatoes…
This is comfort food at its best! (Of course, I “adapted” it, adding mushrooms, and using Beefy Mushroom, when I can find it.) Thanks for the recipe–I will try it on buns, and bring it back into my recipe rotation!

Michelle,
I make onion burgers that are sloppy. 1lb ground beef browned and add 1 can of cream of onion soup, no water or milk just the condensed soup. Comes out creamy and good
