Tired of cold cereal and boring oatmeal for breakfast? A batch of warm, savory Ham & Cheese Scones is the perfect way to shake up your typical morning meal.
While scones may seem difficult, they are basically just a fancy biscuit. The basic recipe includes flour, butter and cream. And for great flavor, you add in some cheddar and lots of tasty Smithfield Diced Ham.
Prep time is under 10 minutes and then they go in the oven for about 20 more minutes. Once they bake up, you end up with a buttery, flaky and absolutely delicious way to start the day!
The great thing about scones is that you can prep them ahead and then pop them in the oven when needed. You can even freeze them and bake from frozen, allowing you to bake just what you need.
Keeping plenty of Smithfield’s line of Anytime Favorites products on hand means that I can have something tasty ready when I need it.
The Anytime Favorites products are all fully cooked and ready to go right out of the package, making them the perfect go-to option for a quick and satisfying meal. Options include diced ham, cubed ham, sliced ham, ham steaks and more. You’ll find the perfect variety for all your favorite meals and recipes.
Ham & Cheddar Scones
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 4 tbsp very COLD butter, grated or cut into small cubes
- 3/4 cup COLD heavy cream + additional for brushing
- 1/2 cup Smithfield Anytime Favorites Diced Ham
- 1 cup cheddar cheese - shredded
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400º F.
- Mix the flour, baking powder, garlic powder, black pepper and salt together in a large bowl.
- Use a pastry cutter (or a couple of forks) to cut the COLD butter into the dry ingredients, just until pea sized crumbs form.
- Add the ham and cheese and mix to combine.
- Make a hole or well in the center of the mixture and add ¾ cup of cream and mix just until everything is incorporated. You should be able to squeeze the dough together. If too crumbly, add a little more cream and mix. DO NOT OVER WORK THE DOUGH.
- Move the dough to a lightly floured surfacer and shape into a rectangle that is 12"x3" in size.
- Carefully cut the rectangle into 8 equal sized triangles.
- Place on a parchment lined sheet pan and brush the tops of the scones with heavy cream.
- Bake for 20 - 22 minutes or until golden brown.
