The recipe that I am sharing today is for all of you who say that you CAN’T bake bread.
If you can measure ingredients and work a spoon, you are on your way to a simple and delicious bread with almost no effort. Seriously, four ingredients and about 15 minutes is all you need for super tasty rolls that are the perfect compliment to any meal.
Now you may be a little surprised by the ingredients in these rolls. All you need is self-rising flour, milk, a little bit of sugar and some Hellmann’s Mayonnaise.
Yep, mayonnaise is the key to this recipe. But, while they require mayonnaise and are called Mayonnaise Rolls, they don’t taste like mayonnaise at all.
I have been making these for many, many years (ok… possibly decades at this point) and they are my go-to option when I need something quick for soup, stews or chili. Because they are made with pantry staples, I can throw them together in a pinch.
Now some folks call these biscuits and others call them rolls. They are really somewhere in the middle, if you ask me. They aren’t quite the texture of either, but since they aren’t that flaky texture that I associate with a big buttery biscuit, in my world, these are rolls!
But the name is really of no importance… the main thing is the taste. And these babies taste great!
Hellmann's Mayonnaise Rolls
Ingredients
- 2 cups SELF-RISING flour
- 1/4 cup Hellmann's Mayonnaise
- 1 cup milk
- 1 tsp sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400º F and prepare a muffin pan by lining with paper cups or spraying with cooking spray.
- In a large bowl, add the self-rising flour, sugar, milk and Hellmann's Mayonnaise and stir just until combined. Do not overwork!
- Allow the dough to sit for 5 - 10 minutes.
- Spoon the dough into the prepared pan and bake for 15 minutes, until lightly golden.
- Cool slightly then remove from the pan to a cooling rack.
- Serve with butter and enjoy!
Now the recipe is super easy. But, there are a couple of tips that will ensure your rolls turn out great. First, don’t overwork or over mix the dough. Too much mixing will lead to dense, heavy rolls. And similar to pancakes, giving the dough a couple of minutes to rest results in a lighter fluffier roll.
So the next time you need rolls but don’t want to bother with the work and wait of yeast rolls, pull out your Hellmann’s and whip up a batch of tasty Mayonnaise Rolls.
