With the BOGO sale on pizza dough I wanted to remind you that there are dinner options besides pizza! Why not whip up an Easy Calzone for dinner?
The great thing about a Calzone is that you can customize them for each person in your family. At my house, we all like totally different things. When it comes time for dinner I take requests and build each calzone to specifically for each person.
You can also make the calzones in different sizes. So for my boys, I only need a quarter of a dough ball but I use a half dough ball for the adult versions. That means that I have to buy two dough balls. So I end up with one extra calzone that turns into yummy leftovers.
Now all of my guys prefer their calzone with “sauce in” but I like to make mine without sauce and then just dip it in the a bowl of sauce after it’s cooked. That way I control how much sauce I get per bite.
This recipe is part of the Publix Menu – Week Of 9/25. Here are the other recipes that I have shared so far –
- Pre-made pizza dough ball (try this recipe)
- Pizza sauce
- Mozzarella Cheese
- Parmesan Cheese
- Variety of topping such as: spinach, pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions, feta, sun dried tomatoes, etc
- Preheat oven to 400º F.
- Cut the dough ball in half and roll out to a large 12″ circle.
- Place sauce (if desired) and toppings on half of the circle leaving a 1/2 inch border.
- Fold the other side of the dough over lining up the edges.
- Gently push and crimp the edges to seal the calzone.
- Place on a parchment lined sheet pan or pizza stone and cook for 15 – 18 minutes or until the top of the crust is golden brown.
- Repeat the process with the 2nd dough ball.
The best way to tackle everything is to send the kids to their Grandparents house! 🙂

I also make quick calzones, but I use pita pockets. Fill the pocket with your choice of fillings and wrap each one in a small sheet of foil. Stick in a preheated oven for about 15-18 mins, and yum! REALLY fast calzones! Especially great for when you feel like a calzone, but have no dough in the house. I’ve been making these for about 35 years.
